Scientific Calculator

Use this free online scientific calculator for advanced mathematics: trigonometry, logarithms, powers and roots, factorials, percentages, and the constants π and e. It parses full expressions with correct operator precedence, supports degree and radian angle modes, and runs entirely in your browser - nothing you type is sent to a server.

What it can do

  • Arithmetic (+ − × ÷) - with real operator precedence, so 2 + 3 × 4 evaluates to 14, not 20.
  • Trigonometry (sin, cos, tan) - in degrees (DEG) or radians (RAD), chosen with the DEG/RAD toggle.
  • Inverse trig (asin, acos, atan) - press 2nd to switch sin, cos, and tan to their inverse functions.
  • Logarithms (log, ln) - base-10 and natural logarithms.
  • Powers and roots - xʸ exponentiation, x² squaring, and √ square root.
  • Factorial (n!) and 1/x - permutations and reciprocals.
  • 10ˣ and % - powers of ten and per cent.
  • Constants (π, e) - insert pi or Euler's number into an expression.
  • ± - negate the current value.

The calculator understands complete expressions and parentheses. Parentheses stay open while you type, so you can keep adding to the bracketed part: 2 * (3 + 4) gives 14. Any parentheses still open when you press = are closed automatically, so 2 * (3 + 4 is treated as 2 * (3 + 4).

Keyboard input

Type your expression directly:

  • 0–9, . - digits and decimal point.
  • + − * / ^ ( ) - operators, powers, and grouping.
  • Enter or = - evaluate the expression.
  • Esc - reset everything.
  • Backspace - delete the last character.
  • ! - factorial, % - per cent.

Worked examples

Sine of 30 degrees:

  1. Make sure the angle mode reads DEG.
  2. Press sin, enter 30, press = → 0.5.

Powers: press 2, xʸ, 10, = → 1024.

Logarithms: press log, enter 100, = → 2, because 10² = 100.

Factorial: enter 5, press n! → 120.

Parentheses: enter 2 * ( 3 + 4 ) → 14 - try the same input on the Simple Calculator and you will see why expression parsing makes the difference.

Understanding DEG and RAD

Trigonometry works on angles, and there are two common ways to measure them:

  • DEG - a full circle is 360 degrees. Useful for everyday and geometry work, surveying, and navigation.
  • RAD - a full circle is 2π radians. The natural choice in calculus, physics, and most programming languages.

The trigonometric functions use the selected mode for their input, and the inverse functions report their result in the selected mode as well. sin 30° = 0.5 in DEG mode, while sin(π/6) = 0.5 in RAD mode - the same ratio, two ways of measuring the angle.

Example: triangle geometry

You know a right-angled triangle has an angle of 35° opposite a side of 7 cm, and you want the hypotenuse:

  1. Set the mode to DEG.
  2. Enter 7, press ÷, then sin, enter 35 and close the bracket with ) - the display reads 7/sin(35).
  3. Press = → 12.204… so the hypotenuse ≈ 12.2 cm (sin 35° ≈ 0.5736, and 7 ÷ 0.5736 ≈ 12.2).

When to use which calculator

The Scientific Calculator is right for homework, engineering, physics, finances with compound growth (via xʸ), or any expression that combines several operations.

For quick everyday arithmetic - shopping totals, tips, simple divisions - the Simple Calculator is all you need.
