Text Find & Replace
Replace text the way a word processor would — literally, instantly, and safely. Type or paste your text, specify what to find and what to replace it with, and watch every occurrence change live. Unlike the Regex Tester, this tool treats your find term as a plain string: no escaping, no pattern syntax, no surprises. Perfect for fixing typos across a block of text, swapping names in a prepared sample, or normalizing a list where the same word appears over and over.
How to use
- Paste your text in the Text area.
- Enter the term to find — it is searched for literally, so "a.b" finds only the exact characters "a.b" and never "axb".
- Enter the replacement — it is inserted literally too, so dollar signs and brackets stay exactly as you typed them.
- Toggle case sensitive to distinguish "Fox" from "fox", and whole words only to avoid partial matches inside longer words.
- The result updates live, and the counter above it shows how many replacements were made.
Example: the same find, four different outcomes
With the text "The fox and the foxes saw a foxhole":
- "fox" replaced, whole words on: "The X and the foxes saw a foxhole" — only the standalone word changed.
- "fox" replaced, whole words off: "The X and the Xes saw a Xhole" — every occurrence of the letters changed.
- Case-sensitive on: "the fox" finds only lowercase forms.
- Repeatedly: use the copy button to move the result anywhere.
The counter is especially useful in document cleanup — seeing "12 replacements" beats trusting your eye after a large paste.
Whole words vs. partial matches
"Whole words only" uses proper word boundaries, so punctuation does not break the match: "Hello, world!" finds "world" but not "world.", and a boundary followed by a letter inside a word blocks the match entirely. Terms that are not themselves letters or digits still work, because the boundaries are only enforced where your term actually starts and ends — "C++" with whole words on still replaces cleanly in "I love C++.".
Literal, never regular expressions
The Regex Tester on this site is the place for patterns. Here, everything is literal, which is exactly the guarantee you want for a one-off find-and-replace: the find box contents are treated as raw characters, and the replacement is written out verbatim, so even $&, \< or backslashes in the replacement text never trigger magic behavior. If you ever need pattern-based matches, groups, or backreferences, the Regex Tester has a dedicated replace mode for exactly that.
Typical uses
- Cleanup passes: fixing "teh" to "the" across a pasted block.
- Sample data: swapping placeholders like "ACME Corp" for real names in generated documents.
- CSV tidying: normalizing inconsistent separators or removing a repeated prefix from hundreds of lines.
- Learning: showing someone what case-sensitivity actually does to a search.
Why it lives on this site
Text Find & Replace belongs to the Developer category alongside the Regex Tester, Case Converter, and List Utilities. It is a pure client-side component: your text never leaves the browser, nothing is uploaded or stored, and the tool works offline. Paste, replace, copy — done.
