Random Item Picker

Pick random items from any list you paste in — raffle the winner, choose who goes first, or sample a few names for a test. Write one item per line, say how many you want, and the tool draws them with cryptographically secure randomness. This is the flat "hat" that decides everything from who brings the snacks to which idea gets prototyped next, without arguing about favorites.

How to use

  1. Items — one per line: paste your names, tasks, products, or numbers, one line each. Blank lines are ignored.
  2. How many picks: choose how many items the draw should return.
  3. Allow the same item twice: when on, each pick is independent — one name can win repeatedly, like drawing from a hat and putting the slip back. When off, the tool draws distinct winners, exactly how a raffle for several prizes should work; in that mode the number of picks is automatically limited to the number of items you gave it.
  4. Pick again: the button re-runs the draw with fresh randomness. Use it as many times as you like — the outcome changes every time.

The picked items appear in the Result band and can be copied to the clipboard.

Where it shines

  • Raffles and sweepstakes: everyone gets their name on a line, one name comes out. With a cryptographic source nobody can accuse you of rigging it.
  • Picking a starter: three players, three lines, one pick — clean and neutral.
  • Group dividers: put the same list in twice, pick twice, and you have two balanced-looking teams in seconds.
  • Random sampling: pull a handful of items out of a bigger spec list to test a random subset of features.
  • Writing and brainstorming: shuffle a set of words into a constraint for a writing exercise or a game master's random table.

Why the randomness is trustworthy

The pick engine reads from the browser's cryptographic random source — the same entropy used to create security keys — rather than from Math.random(), which is a reproducible pseudo-random sequence. For a competition result, that distinction matters: with a proper source, nobody can predict or reconstruct the draw, and a skeptical audience has an actual guarantee that the outcome was not influenced by the tool.

With or without replacement?

  • With replacement (the checkbox on): every pick is independent and may repeat. Imagine a die: rolling a 4 twice is perfectly normal. Good for repeated independent choices.
  • Without replacement (checkbox off): the same item can never be drawn twice. Imagine a physical hat where each slip is removed after being drawn. Exactly what a prize draw needs when there are several unrelated prizes to hand out.

The mode difference is easy to overlook but changes the odds completely — keep it in mind before you announce the rules.

Combine with the other tools

Want the draw to feel like a ceremony? Use List Tools to sort or shuffle your entries first, then let Random Item Picker choose. The Developer category is built around exactly this kind of small, composable utility: pick, shuffle, randomize — all with the same honest randomness.

Why it lives on this site

Random Item Picker is pure client-side logic in the Developer category: your list never leaves your browser, nothing is stored, and the tool works offline. Paste the names, click Pick again once more for good luck, and let the hat decide.
