Date Difference Calculator

Date difference is the question behind half of deadline math. How many days until the release ships, how many months since the project started, how many weekdays remain before the demo, how old is that contract in weeks? This calculator takes any two calendar dates and answers all of those at once, live in your browser, without sending your dates anywhere.

How to use

  1. Pick the start date and End date using the two date fields. The result updates instantly as you type or pick.
  2. Read the hero figure — the exact span split into years, months, and days.
  3. Check the tile grid below it for the total days, the weeks + days breakdown, and the weekdays (Monday to Friday) count.
  4. Use the Use today button to set the end date to the current date — handy for "how many days since…" and similar relative questions.

If you enter the dates in reverse order, the tool is not confused: it computes the absolute span and prefixes the hero units with a minus sign to show the direction.

How the year–month–day split works

The split counts full calendar months from the start date's day-of-month. When the end date's day falls earlier in the month, the calculation borrows a month and resolves the remainder as days across the preceding month boundary. A couple of examples make this concrete:

  • 15 March 2020 → 22 July 2022 is 2 years, 4 months, and 7 days.
  • 31 January → 1 March resolves to 1 month and 1 day, not "30 days", because the calendar month of February counts toward the month component.
  • 12 December 2021 → 15 January 2024 is 2 years, 1 month, and 5 days.

This is the same convention widely used by spreadsheet DATEDIF and date-picker age fields, so you can compare numbers across tools without confusion.

The other measurements

Measurement Meaning
Total days the entire span as plain days, direction ignored
Weeks + days how many full 7-day weeks fit, plus the leftover
Weekdays days from Monday to Friday in the half-open interval [start, end), counting the start day and not the end day

The weekday count matters for business questions — an invoice that promises "10 working days" skips weekends, and tracked expected deliveries land on a Friday or the following Monday. Note that the tool does not account for national holidays, which differ by country and region; for holiday-aware calculations add your own calendar on top of the weekday count.

Common uses

  • Time tracking: "How long has this feature been in development?" becomes a single number you can quote in a report.
  • Contract and warranty math: spans in months that financial or legal tooling expects.
  • Sprint and release planning: the weekday count tells you how many real working days a milestone has left, independent of the weekend gap.
  • Anniversaries and milestones: the years–months–days figure is exactly the form people want for "we met X years ago".

Why it runs in the browser

Date arithmetic is pure local computation — no server round-trip, no storage, and no third-party cookies. The implementation carefully uses UTC-normalized day counts to avoid the off-by-one hour errors that naive timestamp subtraction introduces around daylight-saving changes, so the day totals are correct even across DST transitions. Like every tool on this site, the calculator is a self-contained component that works offline and keeps your data on your device.

Pairing with other tools

Used together, the date difference calculator and the site's Age Calculator cover the two common flavors: a fixed range between two chosen dates, and "today minus a birthday". The Text Statistics tool is a natural companion for reports built around these numbers, letting you count and format the paragraphs that describe them.
